Does your child have plenty of baby teeth? Do they look perfectly straight to you?
You may be surprised to know that there could be developmental problems lurking behind that precious smile. An orthodontist specializes in identifying issues that may be developing with your child’s jaw growth, bone structure, and erupting teeth that you or your dentist are not aware of.

Have you been told that your child is too young for braces? Has your dentist told you that you should wait until he/she has all their permanent teeth in? You may think you should wait until your child reaches his/her teen years before visiting an orthodontist. However, you’d be surprised to find out how soon your child should have an evaluation. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child gets his/her first orthodontic checkup by age seven.

If an early evaluation does reveal areas of concern, they are best addressed as your child grows. By intercepting these problems early, we can minimize or even prevent your child from having more severe issues later in life, and in some cases, help to avoid surgery and/or periodontal problems in the future.

Early orthodontic treatment, also known as phase one treatment, is not considered in every case. For us to consider using early treatment with a patient, he or she must meet one or more of the following criteria.

– The patient is at risk of permanent tooth removal without early treatment
– The patient is exhibiting problems with jaw growth
– The teeth protrude in a way that puts the patient at risk of experiencing trauma
– Harmful oral habits need to be addressed
– Early treatment could simplify treatment when the patient is older
– Problems with the teeth or jaw are affecting the patient’s speech

Taking the first step to schedule an evaluation with an orthodontist is key to giving you valuable insight into your child’s future. Once you learn the potential areas of concern, you may take a proactive approach to safeguard your child’s dental health, optimizing treatment to ensure your child has the best possible outcome with the least amount of time spent in braces.
